Shakib Al Hasan likely to face 18 month ICC ban

Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s Test and T20 captain is likely to face an 18-month ban from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for not reporting a corrupt approach.

The all-rounder is currently being kept away from team practice, ahead of Bangladesh’s crucial India tour, reportedly on the instructions of the ICC. According to local media, the star player is set to be banned, which means that he will miss the India tour.

The possible ban increases problems for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), as they will not only have to find a suitable replacement for Shakib Al Hasan but also select a temporary captain to lead the team in the India tour. The BCB is also in the midst of convincing its players to agree to the new BCCI President Sourav Ganguly's proposal for a day-night Test.

Shakib Al Hasan Ban

Media reports reveal that ICC has instructed the BCB to keep Shakib Al Hasan away from the practice. The all-rounder was not seen in the practice game of the Bangladesh cricket team, ahead of the crucial India tour. The ICC has not yet made any comment on the issue.

According to the media report, a bookie had approached Shakib Al Hasan with an offer before an international match, almost two years ago. The cricketer failed to report the incident to the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU).

Shakib Al Hasan allegedly confessed about the incident to the ACSU investigating officers recently.

Bangladesh tour to India

The Bangladesh cricket team is expected to leave for India on October 30, 2019 and Shakib Al Hasan will most likely be left out of the tour. The uncertainty over his availability for the India tour had spread after Shakib missed the pre-tour camp and the team’s practice match.

Bangladesh’s tour to India comprises three T20Is and two tests. The tour is scheduled to commence from November 3, 2019 with the three T20Is.

Senior-most player Mushfiqur Rahim is expected to lead Bangladesh in Tests, while Mahmudullah Riyad or Mosaddek Hosain will be named the captain for the three T20 Internationals in Shakib’s absence.

The first Bangladesh vs India test match is scheduled to begin at Indore on November 14, 2019. The match will kick-off Bangladesh’s campaign in the World Test Championship. The second test will begin from November 22 at Eden Gardens in Kolkatta.

Shakib Al Hasan had been in news recently for spearheading a player’s strike but he had called it off after the BCB assured to fulfill all their demands including a pay hike.
